My name is Harmony and I am the founder and creator of Iron & Cub.
Originally from South Australia, I moved to Queensland when I was 17. I spent most of my working life pre kids in Resort Management and I didn’t think I had a crafty bone in my body. My daughter Pearl has always been in to craft, starting with a Mr Maker obsession, then moving on to teaching herself any type of craft she could off YouTube. At the age of 6 she started teaching herself macrame with wool. On Mother’s Day it was terrible weather so we went to spotlight and bought some rope so she could teach me and we could get creative together. We sat on the floor in the dining room attaching our rope to the back of the dining room chairs and she taught me the knots she had learnt. From there we dried out some driftwood and made some plant hangers.
That was the beginning of Iron and Cub. Iron coming from my surname and Cub from Pearl, my teacher. This time of my life was a challenging one. Macrame became a way to slow my mind & distract me from everything happening. It was a therapeutic outlet I needed. Macrame led in to Kokedamas as I couldn’t find pots I liked for the plant hangers. Then one day a friend said I should make a rainbow and here I am, now drowning in rainbows.
As you can tell, my business sort of happened by accident when I realised I was creative. I have never followed a macrame pattern (or even looked at one), all my pieces are created as I go which is what makes them so unique. All my products are made and designed by me, in my home, with a little assistance from my amazing sidekick Tulsi so we can try and keep up with the demand.
As I’m a solo mum I love the freedom and flexibility my business gives me so I can work around my two girls. I am so grateful to all my amazing customers and followers, if it wasn’t for you my business wouldn’t be where it is today and I wouldn’t be able to spend nearly as much time with my little family.
My mission is to continue sharing my handmade creations with you all. Especially my rainbows to those who cherish them as a symbolic keepsake in memory of the loss of a child. Amidst all the crazy rainbow making I am also working on some new products, which I can’t wait to show you all very soon.
